Looking better - apache's up and running and talking to the SP side of Shibboleth. This is a straightforward apache install with

./configure --prefix=/opt/apache2 --enable-proxy --enable-ssl

Now receiving config errors in the browser (a definite improvement):

Unknown or Unusable Identity Provider

The identity provider supplying your login credentials is not authorized for use with this service or does not support the necessary capabilities.
