Behold: the weekend
My local apache is now running a test installation of our site, alongside the modified Shibboleth sample install. Tweaked the config to require Shibboleth authentication before access to the login page is granted (this is for test only - the real implementation will protect a dedicated Shibboleth gateway page).

Seems to be working! Next to check from the login action that Shibboleth really is setting the additional HTTP headers we expect, then the integration work can begin.
