The mercator transformation gives us a better match to the grid coordinates, but it's still not quite linear. Will press ahead using this transformation for the moment to see where it gets us.

We'll be keeping all our internal processing in lon/lat coordinates so we don't have to worry about projection issues anywhere except the user interface. It does look as if we may have to store separate transformations for each atlas we use.
